Philanthropic support is vital for the very early high risk stages of new company formation. Our early stage funds are key to ensuring societal and economic impact from University research.

The University of Cambridge Discovery Fund offers the opportunity to support the commercialisation of Cambridge-produced innovations for the benefit of the inventors, the University, the UK economy and wider society.

The Fund redresses a serious gap in the market. While early stage venture capital is available for investment-ready spin-outs, there has been comparatively little access to pre-seed and seed funding. An evergreen resource of £5 million to invest in science with clear commercial potential, the Discovery Fund will provide vital early support to 8-12 opportunities a year. Proceeds of realisations will be used to replenish the Fund, maximising the impact of gifts to it.

Your gift to the Discovery Fund

  • will be put to work right away to support a promising innovation
  • will have an impact that goes well beyond the initial gift as realisations will be returned to the fund to support future innovations
  • can be followed as it works by tracking innovations launched as a result of a gift
  • is a wonderful way of supporting innovation and smoothing the path for future entrepreneurs

University of Cambridge Enterprise works with members of the University to help them commercialise their research and provide consultancy services to industry. We also give vital support to early-stage companies, helping them develop innovative technology ventures which benefit society and the wider economy.
